Henbury Loop Line

If you want to see Henbury station re-opened and used as an important transport resource for north Bristol and beyond, take a look at the video and sign the petition.

Along with the rest of the local Severn Beach Line, a re-opened Henbury station and loop line is an obvious part of the answer to Bristol's unsustainable transport problems.

Growing Local Food in Westbury and Henleaze

Image via Wikipedia Know any land suitable for growing food on in the area?

The Council's Land Use Consultation comes to BS9 this month with an open event at Trinity Henleaze United Reform Church, Bradbury Hall on 20th September. Members of the public with an interest in seeing more land released for local food production are invited to drop in any time between 12.00 noon and 8.00 pm.


An identical event for Henbury & Southmead will run on September 27th at the Greenway Centre, Doncaster Road, Southmead.

Information and opinions gleaned during this city-wide consultation will, apparently, help to inform decisions on land use in the city for the coming decades.

Here's my off-the-top-of-my head list of possible food growing sites in the area:

• the Dairy Garden at Blaise Castle Estate
• part of the Arnall Drive Open Space at Henbury
• a corner of the field at Henbury School
• the front garden at Elmlea Junior School and the back garden at the Infants' School
• the grounds of the former Elmfield School on Greystoke Avenue
• the hidden valley between Channell's Hill and Bowness Gardens (might be a bit steep?)
• the small plot adjacent to the Westbury on Trym surgery
• a slice of the Coombe Dingle Sports Centre field

Bristol Balloon Bales in Back Garden

Was slightly bemused, while standing at the bus stop on the corner of Falcondale Road and Henbury Road this morning (the one just slightly up from the new Texaco/Somerfield) to see a low-flying hot air balloon cruise gracefully over Canford Park, Henbury Golf Course and the back gradens of properties on Southdown Road.

Nothing unusual about that, Bristol being a European centre of hot air ballooning and Westbury on Trym being on the flight path from Ashton Court.

I had not, however, previously seen a bolloon come down in theat exact spot before - just behind the row of houses on the bend of Henbury Road.

No breaking glass heard, so presumably the golf course or Blasie Castle estate was the final landing spot.

Haart Failure

The credit crunch bit into Westbury estate agent Haart this month as the local branch closed its doors and ceased trading, transferring its business to its Shirehampton branch.

Haart's parent company, Spicehaart, claims to represent the largest independent estate agency in Europe. In Westbury on Trym, however, the local branch has never really managed to break into the top end of the local housing market. It's windows, before they were whitewashed and a sign placed on the door, always tended to be full of properties for sale in Henbury and Brentry and could, therefore, as easily be marketed from Shirehampton.

I couldn't help noticing, meanwhile, that competitor Andrews, was boasting 15 house sales in its Westbury on Trym shop window this week. Which proves the point that there is always a buyer if the price is right.

I also notice that the large eco-house on Henbury Road remains unsold.
